Major Walter B. Sanderson, Jr.
1921 - 2017

Born on March 20, 1921 at Washington, D.C. Major Walter B. Sanderson, Jr.
was an American Hero. But he was much, much more. He was also an accomplished
student. He was one of two salutatorians who received the grade of A in every
class but one. As an Cadet in the Dunbar High School Cadet Corps, Major Sanderson
was one of two students to attain the rank of Major. In 1937 Major Sanderson won
a scholarship to attend Howard University by attaining the highest score on a
scholarship examination offered by The Washington News (Washington, D.C.). He
majored in Mathematics and minored in Physics. Major Sanderson was the highest
ranking cadet in the Howard University ROTC Program when graduated with a B.S.
degree in 1941.

In early 1942 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the segregated 25th
Infantry Regiment, 93rd Division. The 25th Infantry Regiment is one of the
four U.S. Army Regiments that served with distinction and valor during the
Indian Wars. Major Walter B. Sanders, Jr. was a Buffalo Soldier.
