Briefly, what are the battle histories of the two Buffalo Soldiers cavalry units?Early on, the 9th Cavalry Regiment ran up an enviable record against Comanches and Utes, as well as against the Sioux at the Pine Ridge in Dakota Territory. In Cuba during the Spanish-American War, it captured one of the Spanish blockhouses at Santiago. That's why the blockhouses appear on the 9th Regiment crest. In recent times, the regiment won honors as an integrated unit in the Tet counter-offensive in Vietnam. The 10th Cavalry Regiment is one of the unique regiments in the annals of U.S. military history. Ordered west from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas soon after its activation in 1866, it began its march into immortality. In Montana, it chased the famous ghost dancers of the Sioux and in Arizona its guides followed Geronimo into the steep canyons belonging to Geronimo, Natchez, and the "Apache Kid". The regiment also distinguished itself in Cuba at Santiago, Las Guasimas, and the famous charge up San Juan Hill.
