What are some of the awards received by the Buffalo Soldiers?Among the thousands of Buffalo Soldiers who served so honorably in some of the harshest fighting on the frontier and overseas, 21 earned the Medal of Honor, their nation's highest award for valor. Those Black Medal of Honor recipients, like those who preceeded them in the Civil War, embodied the finest qualities of fighting men. They placed themselves in harm's way to save their fellow soldiers, pushing beyond normal limits of endurance to protect settlements or showing leadership that turned the tide of battle. They proved to a nation, which did not generally care to notice, that Black men could ride, shoot, fight, and lead. They embodied Black valor.
