Did African-Americans serve as officers in any of the units?Three graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point served with Black cavalry units. They were Henry O. Flipper (the first Black graduate of West Point), John H. Alexandria, and Charles Young. Also, Black chaplains were assigned to the units. They were Theophilus G. Steward, George W. Preleau, Henry V. Plummer, William T. Anderson, Allen Allensworth, and Louis Carter.
